Does social media play a role in your self-esteem?
Do you need a certain amount of likes on your photos?
Do you need a certain amount of followers to feel accepted?
If you said yes to any of these questions, you’re allowing social media to define your self-esteem.
Women use comments to feel self assured by what other people think. It can cause an unrealistic view of what other people post on a daily bases.
Unfortunately, social media only allows us to see the surface of people’s lives. People hide behind social media to help achieve the confidence they look for because it’s a challenge to face it in reality. Social media tells us our bodies need to look a certain way which can lower our self-esteem. We create role models out of women who influence us with their makeup and physical attributes. Just remember there is more to a woman than just looks.
Some women are unaware that posting photos is not a way to validate themselves. Your worth is not defined by what society tells you. It is determined by how you feel about yourself. We must not allow social media to take control of our lives. As women, we need to become our own and be strong, independent, and not ashamed to show the world who we are.
According to an article from Cosmopolitan Magazine, Alicia Keys says, “Women are brainwashed into feeling like we have to be skinny, or sexy, or desirable, or perfect. One of the many things I was tired of was the constant judgment of women. The constant stereotyping through every medium that makes us feel like being a normal size is not normal, and heaven forbid if you're plus-size. Or the constant message that being sexy means being naked. Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn't put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture? What if they POSTED it? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me."
In the end, Alicia stood by her statement saying, "I don't want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth.”
By not suppressing our thoughts, our individuality, we learn self-love. We need to love our bodies, looks, eye color, hair, etc. to the fullest. Self-love provides you with self-confidence, self-worth, and feeling more positive about who you are. Learn to embrace yourself by doing the little things like; making a list of your accomplishments, going to the spa with your girls and repeating daily affirmations to maintain and build your self-esteem. There's no time to allow social media to define your confidence or self-esteem.
